Main Objective

The objective of this project is to develop experimental data to validate the appropriateness and effectiveness of passive fire mitigation systems subject to fire impingement. Additionally, the project will develop criteria for hazard modeling of these passive fire mitigation systems, and define criteria for the onset of structural failure of structural steel or pressure vessels exposed to fire. The project deliverables will support PHMSA in its ongoing efforts to improve LNG fire safety.

Public Abstract

The project team will build upon recently completed, directly relevant work for PHMSA and others, and its deep knowledge and expertise of LNG facilities, hazard modeling tools, and NFPA 59A standards development, to achieve the goals set forth in the project statement. The project team will leverage publicly available data on passive fire mitigation (PFM) systems as well as direct collaboration with PFM manufacturers and plant designers; the team will also collaborate closely with PHMSA and a knowledgeable Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). Physical testing will benefit from the pool fire setups available at the world-renowned Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) fire training facility, which also provides a wealth of experience and a long track record of safety.

Project Description: This project validates the effectiveness of PFM systems for LNG facilities through rigorous testing and analysis. By generating valuable data, the project enhances design, installation, and maintenance of these systems, improving overall fire safety. In addition, it develops hazard modeling criteria of PFM systems and establishes structural failure thresholds under fire conditions. By advancing the understanding of PFM system performance, this project strengthens risk management in the LNG industry, contributing to safer and more resilient LNG facilities.

Anticipated Results: This project delivers several key outcomes. It generates comprehensive experimental data to validate PFM system effectiveness under various fire scenarios. It refines hazard modeling criteria, enabling more accurate risk assessments and design considerations. The project defines structural failure thresholds for steel components exposed to fire, guiding the development of fire-resistant structure design. In addition, it provides practical recommendations for PFM system design, installation, and maintenance, equipping industry stakeholders with actionable insights. By advancing fire safety knowledge in the LNG industry, the project fosters innovation and best practices for fire mitigation.

Potential Impact on Safety: This project significantly enhances pipeline and LNG facility safety PFM system performance. By validating system effectiveness and refining design criteria, it helps reduce the risk of catastrophic fires in pipeline infrastructure. The project's findings contribute to the development of more fire-resistant and resilient LNG facilities, ultimately safeguarding public safety.
